I have to admit, I've been one of those older ladies caught up in reading young adult vampire books. The Discovery of Witches is truly a book written for adults. I loved all the details about the wine, history and old colleges. While reading this book, I became curious about the places she was writing about. To me, that's the sign of a good book. I enjoyed the characters and their personalities. Can't wait for the next one in the series!

| Not so good | October 13, 2011 |
| By: Leila Phillips | Louisville, Kentucky (US) | |
The book is very hard to continue. While the romance between the vampire and the witch is captivating and amusing the plot drags. The book is full of so much unnecessary detail that you want to pull your hair out before you get to the next part. Every scent, taste, sensation of food and drink is extolled to the teeth grinding, mind numbing end. It could have been a hundred pages shorter and been a better read. You are left with so many dangling story line threads that you hope there is a sequel just so your time reading the first book is not a complete waste of time.

The has been the best book that I have read since Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. I look forward to the continuing magical adventures of Matthew and Diana.

Someone else described it as a grown-up Twilight. I agree. One of the best books in this genre ever. Loved it and cant waint until the next one comes out.

| Do not buy or read! | June 14, 2011 |
| By: ZD | Miami, Florida (US) | |
Well, this was a total waste of brain cells. I also heard about this book in Parade and the review was so fantastic that I knew I wanted to read this book. What a disappointment! Not only was this book boring and long, but it was nothing like the reviewer had described in the Parade, or like any of the other reviews that had been published before the release of the book. I felt cheated and angry. I really couln't care less about a witch doing yoga, or having tea or falling in love with a vampire out of nowhere. At times, I just wanted to stop reading for good. Bottom line, beware of the hype before the readers and buyers, like you and me, have a chance to actually read it and rate it!

| witches and vampires meet a history buff | May 31, 2011 |
| By: jennym | Provo, Utah (US) | |
I thought the story was engaging and a compelling read, albeit very long, and had potential but I can't recommend it wholeheartedly because of two reasons. The author goes into great detail about every taste and flavor and scent of every sip wine the characters take and it was distracting from the plot. She gave it up the last few pages, which was a relief. The second is that I felt like I read 'we should love who we want and marry who we choose without fear' a lot. So many times it got preachy. The series does have potential though. I liked the characters and I wanted to like this book more than I did.

I can't wait for the next 2 volumes! This book was a bit slow and tedious at first. Then it became a page turner. It is not for the 12 and under crowd. The author has tried to bring a scientific basis to the lore re witches, vampires and other creatures. It helps if you know and love literature, history and fairy tales. Think of it as Harry Potter + Twilight + The daVinci Code + historical romance rolled into a novel. It takes its time to educate you and then as if enchanted, you can't put it down.

This book started off with interesting, well educated characters. However, it quickly went downhill from there. The main character is an educated, and apparently powerful woman, however she becomes quickly subservient and ditzy. The author spent alot of time on irrelevant topics, such as tea and food. I almost put it down several times, but kept trying, hoping for improvement. In the end I got about 2/3 the way through and just couldn't force myself to continue.
If your type of book has a strong female dominated with in a few days of meeting a man, this book is for you.

| A delightful read | March 16, 2011 |

Although this book started slow, it sure took off! Character development is really nice, you begin to care about the main characters, their families and their struggles. There comes a point when you just can't put the book down until you have completed the book! I am really looking forward to the sequel and I hope it is soon! Great read.
