 The Night CircusApril 13, 2012

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Captivating in a way that is difficult to articulate, this magical debut novel is quite literally ‘unputdownable’. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it and biding time impatiently with my daily life until I had the chance to run away back to the circus. This beautifully written novel is at once both a compelling love story and the enchanting and fantastical tale of Le Cirque des Rêves, “The Circus of Dreams”, a mysterious travelling circus that is the sensation of the turn of last century. The author has crafted a parallel world of enigmatic entrepreneurs who exist in a time when society was more readily amazed and amused by the clever trickery of charismatic performers. Opening at nightfall and closing at dawn, with circular paths leading between tents entirely of black and white, the circus delights and entrances those who come to see the contortionists, acrobats, illusionists and the carousel. Those who fall under its spell call themselves the rêveurs – the dreamers -but even they could not begin to know or understand the dark secrets of the origins of the Le Cirque des Rêves and the terrible price two young illusionists must pay to fulfil a gentleman’s wager of dangerous consequence and incredible folly. Original, compelling and utterly enthralling, this is a novel that takes you out of the realm of the everyday and spirits you away to a place where magic does happen.

Magical, Mysterious, but not quite satisfyingMarch 17, 2012

I enjoyed the mystery built up in the first half of the book--the vagueness and, for the most part, lack of concrete scenes works to its advantage. It's a hard book not to be interested in. Who doesn't love a competition between magicians, even if those magicians use real magic? At first it was hard to judge. not knowing the limitations of the magic the magicians can perform makes it hard to be impressed by what they create, but later on their own particular talents and limitations were explained to my satisfaction. For all the built-up mystery, one expects a lot of plot twists, and while there are a lot of details revealed later (some more descernible than others), there were never any satisfying twists. Regardless, it was a solid novel and a quick read. One of the few that might make a better movie than book, actually, if they can keep it away from cheese. It also had a hollywood sex throw down that didn't really seem to fit with the ethereal tone most of the book takes. I guess these things happen. In books and movies, anyway.

Run away with the circus! Don all black clothes with a splash of red and be mesmerized as you listen to Jim Dale's reading of the Night Circus.

Suffice it to say that The Night Circus deserves every accolade it has received. I was enchanted, laughed, cried, enabled of all my senses, and transformed. I came out the other side different than when I entered. For lack of a better word - Magic! Read it in any form you enjoy; listen to it; but don't miss it's uncanny presence.

Astonishing visualizations and writing. But I hadn't realized LSD was back. Maybe with just a touch of schizophrenia.

A title by another first time author that is causing a lot of discussion is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Imagine Ms. Morgenstern’s reaction when as a rookie novelists whose book is not due out until September, Summit Entertainment, the group that brought us the Twilight films, bought the rights to her novel. Summit Entertainment wants to describe this as a young adult novel but that is wrong. This is a tale of greed, fate and love. This is a story of two dueling magicians who fight their battle within the confines of a black and white circus that is only open at night. This is beautifully written and spellbinding to read. One review calls it a self-assured and entertaining, another compelling, well-drawn. I call it inspired. It is not fantasy although there are elements of fantasy; it is not a romance although the love between the two protagonists is strong and eternal; it is an enchanted fable that is hard to put down.

I seriously think this was the best book I've read this year...and it really is only October! This might be the most beautiful and interesting book you will ever read. I am in love with it! I cannot recommend it highly enough! I want to run away with the Night Circus and explore it for the rest of my life!

This book is about a circus and two magicians competing to see who is best. The descriptions of the illusions are compelling and one can picture this book as a movie. The love story aspect seems more like an aside with no real compelling emotion shown and when all is said and done, one really doesn't care what happens to them.

This was a fantastic novel. I found myself drawn into the "game" and I didn't want to put it down. The illusions were describe in away that you could picture them in your mind with easy. I couldn't wait to see how it would end!
