 A tale from historyJuly 04, 2009

Crichton uses details from court documents to reconstruct the details of the Great Train Robbery of 1855. The tale of Edward Pierce’s deliberate and well-executed heist of £ 12,000 gold bullion bound to pay for the Crimean is as entertaining to readers today as it was to those in Victorian England that waited greedily for the Times to uncover more of the details. The pace of the action is slowed at times by the historical information. Also, use of Victorian criminal slang occasionally detracts from the story.

In 1830s London, criminal mastermind Edward Pierce recruits a gang to pull off an audacious heist aboard a speeding payroll train. An entertaining retelling of a true-life crime, enlivened by juicy historical detail of the Victorian underworld.
